In May 2025 we gained our Schools of Sanctuary Award as a school. This award shows that as a school community we are welcoming and kind and celebrate our diversity.
Some of the highlights of the report were:
“The school’s inclusive approach, rooted in practical support and a welcoming ethos, is commendable. Hanson Academy has not only embraced the values of the Schools of Sanctuary programme; it has embedded them meaningfully into daily practice. It (Hanson) stands as a strong example of what sustained, thoughtful work can achieve, and is well-placed to continue leading and inspiring others in the years ahead”.
“Hanson Academy has responded with compassion, commitment, and determination to support refugee and asylum-seeking pupils.”
“Students expressed genuine pride in their diverse community. Those we spoke to clearly understood the value of welcome and the importance of celebrating difference, and they were proud that their school actively promotes these principles”.
We are proud of the hard work our students and staff to do make our school a welcome and safe place for all our students. Here is some of what we have been doing:
Sixth Form students ran a culture day, to celebrate the diverse cultures within our school.
EPC days and the curriculum have engaged students with topics of migration, human trafficking, and sanctuary.
The history department ran a competition for Black History Month, with some amazing entries
Our School Museum showcases different cultures and helps our students to understand different religions, cultures and beliefs.
Our language champions represent their language around school and help new students to settle into Hanson.
We have assemblies to commemorate important events, including Holocaust Memorial Day, Black History Month, Refugee Week and anti-bulling week.
