16-19 Bursary – Application Process 2024/2025

This process is to be followed by students applying for the 16-19 Bursary. There are two types of bursaries, a Discretionary Bursary, and a Vulnerable Bursary.

Each bursary is allocated based on students meeting the eligibility criteria.  The government sets out specific criteria for the vulnerable bursary which entitles students to the funding, whilst the eligibility criteria for the discretionary bursary is determined by the school.  In both cases, the school is responsible for determining whether a student’s application has been successful.

A student must be aged 16 or over but under 19 on 31 August 2024 to be eligible for help from the bursary fund in the 2024 to 2025 academic year, except for the following exceptions:

  • students aged 19 or over are eligible to receive a discretionary bursary if they are continuing on a study programme, they began aged 16 to 18 (19+ continuers) or
  • have an education, health, and care (EHC) plan.

The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund provides financial support to help students overcome specific financial barriers to participation so they can remain in education.

The amount of the bursary payments received is a contribution towards costs involved in accessing Post-16 Education. All payments MUST be sent to the student’s own bank account. The account must be in their name.

Please use the following links to determine the types of bursaries available and the criteria for each:

Dates for submitting the Application

All applications for the bursary should be submitted by the 27th of September to enable the correct and fair assessment of the overall demand and distribution of discretionary awards. Applications received after this date will be considered but will not be backdated.

The school understands however, that some needs may arise throughout the academic year and a need for the bursary may occur. This will be investigated on an individual basis so we can ensure students’ needs can be met. Wherever possible applications should be submitted by the date outlined so that allocated funds can be issued at the start of the academic year. When your application has been assessed, you will be advised of the outcome in writing.

  • No application will be accepted without the correct evidence supplied and the application must be fully completed and signed.
  • No application will be assessed until the student is fully enrolled at Hanson Academy.

Providing False Information:

Students and parents must be aware than any evidence provided to support this application must be valid. Where false information is supplied, the school has the right to investigate this. The school will stop future payments and attempt to recover any past payment where it is apparent that the supplied information is misleading or fraudulent.

The school has the duty to protect public funds that are handled by the school. The information provided in this form may be used to prevent and detect fraud. Therefore, the matter may also be referred to the Education and Skills Funding Agency and/or the police, with the possibility of facing prosecution. You will be informed if your information is being shared in accordance with GDPR.
