Course Introduction

The course is ideal for students who are good at analysing data and have a keen interest in the biological world around them.

The topics covered are

  1. Biological molecules
  2. Cells
  3.  Organisms exchange substances with their environment
  4. Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms
  5. Energy transfers in and between organisms
  6.  Organisms respond to changes in their internal and external environments.
  7.  Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems
  8. The control of gene expression

 As part of the course students will produce a detailed lab book which showcases their skills to carry out a scientific investigation alongside developing their ability to critically analyse data. Students will also understand gain a greater understanding of how the fundamental concepts they have learned underpin the living world through synoptic essays. 

Assessment

A Level biology is a linear subject, assessed at the end of two years of study.

Paper 1: structured questions on topics 1-4 including testing your practical skills.

Paper 2: structured questions on topics 5-8 including testing your practical skills

Paper 3: covers all the content from the course and is made up of structured questions, critical data analysis and a choice of an essay from 2 topics.

Practical Endorsement: your ability to carry out a scientific investigation is tested throughout the two years through a portfolio of experiments recorded in your lab book.
