Course Introduction

The course is ideal for students who are good at manipulating equations and have a keen interest in reactions between different materials.

The topics covered are

  1. Physical chemistry (atomic structure, bonding, energetics, redox reactions, thermodynamics, equilibria and electrochemical cells)
  • Inorganic chemistry (periodicity, group 1 and group 7, transition metals and the oxides of period 3 elements)
  • Organic chemistry (the study of a range of organic molecules including, alcohols, haloalkanes and aromatic compounds. The synthesis and analysis of these molecules. DNA, polymers and proteins are also studied)

As part of the course students will produce a detailed lab book which showcases their skills to carryout a scientific investigation alongside developing their ability to critically analyse data.

Students will also understand gain a greater understanding of how chemists use their understanding of reactions on an atomic level to improve the vast world of manufacturing.

Assessment

A Level Chemistry is a linear subject, assessed at the end of two years of study.

Paper 1: structured questions on physical and inorganic chemistry including testing your practical skills.

Paper 2: structured questions on organic and physical chemistry including testing your practical skills

Paper 3: covers all the content from the course and is made up of structured questions, critical data analysis and multiple choice questions. Practical Endorsement: your ability to carry out a scientific investigation is tested throughout the two years through a portfolio of experiments recorded in your lab book.
