Peel Park Primary School meets the Hanson Suffragettes
On Tuesday 9th December a party of 12 Y6 pupils from Peel Park Primary School visited the Museum at Hanson Academy to find out about the 23 suffragette teachers who campaigned for women’s rights to vote before the first World War. The museum documents the life of these impressive ladies who played such a vital role in securing the rights for women to vote and the exhibition is based around the research undertaken by local historian Jennie Kiff.

As well as learning about the lives of these ladies and the original Hanson Schools on Byron Street, the children were engaged in making button badges and defacing coins with messages exactly as the suffragettes did all those years ago. In addition, they used rubber stamps to print pictures of suffragettes, adding their own slogans to the banners they carried.

The work forms part of the history curriculum in Y6 and History Lead Harjyot Hayer said, ” We absolutely loved it!”

The museum has been established for over two years and includes histories of over 110 ex-students who served and died in each of the world wars and is open to the public by appointment. Schools who would like to make use of this resource should contact Brian Russell on russellb1@hanson.org.uk
